An outbreak of a respiratory disease caused by a Coronavirus (COVID-19) that originated in China has made its way to America. I want to give you a quick update on what we are doing and some precautionary actions you can help to stop the spread and protect yourselves and your families.
Last week I voted in support of an $8.3 billion supplemental spending bill to address the Coronavirus issue. Included in that money was:
- More than $3 billion for research and development on vaccines, therapeutics and treatments.
- $2.2 billion for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to support federal, state and local public health agencies.
- $1 billion for medical supplies, health care preparedness and community health centers.
- $500 million in waivers for telemedicine so that older Medicare recipients can receive certain care remotely.
- $1.25 billion for international support through the State Department.
The severity of the disease is made worse by underlying health conditions such as heart and lung disease, or diabetes. Please click here for a list of symptoms of Coronavirus.
The CDC recommends these steps you can take to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus and protect you and your families:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
Do not be fearful, but be prepared. We will continue to update you all as new information arises, and please do not hesitate to reach out if we can be of assistance in any way.
Sincerely,
Congressman Jeff Van Drew
