Congressman Van Drew Releases Statement on the Final Passage of the Reconciliation Bill

Washington, DC -Today, Congressman Van Drew announced that he secured crucial language in the final Reconciliation bill that will protect New Jersey hospitals and patients.

"Because of our state's unique county-based hospital provider tax model, New Jersey hospitals were at risk of being left behind. As the bill was originally written by the Senate, it would have had a serious negative impact on our hospital system. I made it clear to Congressional leadership that I would not accept any legislation that did not correct this issue," said Congressman Van Drew. "After working closely with President Trump and the White House, we made sure this important fix was included in the final text of the bill to ensure New Jersey remains fully covered."

This protection ensures hospitals will continue to receive the funding they need to care for patients across the state. The bill has passed through the House of Representatives and is now on its way to be signed by President Trump.

"This bill delivers historic investments directly to South Jersey," Congressman Van Drew continued. "We are bringing in $425 million to upgrade U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, transforming it into a world-class facility that will make both South Jersey and the entire country proud. It also sets aside $12.5 billion to modernize our aging air traffic control systems, with the William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic County leading the way, ready to test this new technology to make sure it is safe, effective, and ready to go. I was proud to help secure these investments in the final version of the bill.

"With the passage of this bill, we are delivering real tax relief to the working families of America while protecting and strengthening the programs that truly matter, like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. With so much contradictory information circulating around about this bill, I wanted to take a moment to explain what actually is included in the text, and what is not."

Tax Cuts-

FICTION: This bill is just a tax break for the wealthy.

FACT: This bill delivers the largest middle- and working-class tax cut in U.S. history.

  • It permanently locks in the 2017 Trump Tax Cuts, estimated to boost take-home pay by $10,000 annually for the average middle-class household.
  • It increases pay for millions by ending federal tax on tips.
  • It ends the federal tax on overtime.
  • It offers tax relief for seniors by adding a new income tax deduction for individuals over age 65 of $6,000 per individual and $12,000 per couple.
  • It increases the standard deduction, ensuring that Americans keep more of their hard-earned money.
  • It permanently increases the Child Tax Credit to $2,200, supporting over 40 million families.

Medicaid-

FICTION: This bill cuts Medicaid for millions of eligible recipients.

FACT: There will be NO loss of Medicaid for legal, eligible recipients.

  • This bill will not allow illegal aliens to receive American taxpayer-funded Medicaid.

SNAP-

FICTION: This bill slashes Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding.

  • There are no cuts in SNAP for eligible individuals. Instead, the bill is strengthening the program's integrity, reducing waste, and ensuring those who need it continue to receive the support they need.

FACT: There are NO cuts to Medicare or Social Security in this bill.

  • Medicare has not been touched in this bill. There is no reduced spending on Medicare benefits.
  • This bill does not in any way cut Social Security, but it does offer major tax relief for our seniors by raising the senior tax deduction on Social Security payments to $6,000 per individual and $12,000 per couple. This means 88% of all seniors who receive Social Security will pay no tax on their Social Security benefits.
  • This bill does not make a single cut to Medicare or Social Security. It only protects and strengthens them.
