Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Van Drew shared the following statement after voting against H.Res. 780, which would irresponsibly extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits for three years without any effort to stop the waste, fraud, and abuse in the system. "I have been very clear where I stand from the start: I support extending the ACA tax credits on a short-term basis while we work on a real plan to put in its place," said Congressman Van Drew. "Families who rely on these credits should not be hit with sudden premium increases because we failed to act. But this bill that we voted on today does nothing to fix what is broken. It adds three years to a system with no guardrails for the fraud that is running rampant within it. It is unacceptable. This same proposal has already been rejected in the Senate and has no realistic path to becoming law. We need to focus our energy on something that will work. Right now, there are several bills on this topic that have been introduced in the House that stand a chance to become law, as well as ongoing discussions in the Senate for a shorter extension paired with real reforms like income caps, tighter eligibility checks, and improvements to open enrollment. We cannot accept a flawed bill like this one simply because it is available. Both parties need to stop playing games, recognize the real consequences of our failure to act on healthcare reform, and give the American people a real solution." |
