SALEM COUNTY, NJ- Today, Congressman Jeff Van Drew decried the decision to close Fort Mott in Salem County, New Jersey indefinitely. The State Park Service has advised visitors to head to a different park, which is an approximate 40-minute drive away. While Fort Mott is an important site in the history of our State, the people of Salem County also heavily depend on the park for its recreational opportunities and scenic vistas. Finns Point National Cemetery, which has the only active Department of Veterans Affairs burial site in New Jersey, and inters veterans going back to the Civil War, is only accessible by traveling through Fort Mott. This piece of history will undoubtedly see a decrease in visitors due to the Fort Mott closure. “Once again, Governor Murphy is doing his best to make life more painful for people in South Jersey,” said Congressman Van Drew. “This piece of history, and the well-being it also offers to folks who are looking for that during a pandemic is much-needed. Reopen Fort Mott.” ### |
