Congressman Van Drew Urges NJ Turnpike Authority to Reconsider Contract With CCP-Linked Company

Washington, February 6, 2025 | Paxton Antonucci (202-225-6572)

Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Van Drew sent a letter to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority Board of Commissioners, urging them to reconsider their recent decision to award a $1.73 billion E-ZPass Services' contract to TransCore, a company with ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

"It is completely unacceptable that a company with connections to the CCP could be given access to vast amounts of sensitive U.S. traffic data, including driving habits, travel patterns, and potential infrastructure vulnerabilities," said Congressman Van Drew. "This is a direct threat to both our national security and the privacy of millions of Americans. The CCP has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to exploit foreign partnerships to advance its own strategic interests, often at the expense of U.S. security. Handing over critical infrastructure operations to a company tied to China is reckless and unnecessary when American-based companies are fully capable of handling these services. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority must reconsider this contract immediately and put American interests first."

Background:

  • The New Jersey Turnpike Authority awarded a $1.73 billion E-ZPass contract to TransCore, a Nashville-based company owned by ST Engineering, a Singaporean government-linked entity.
  • ST Engineering is owned by Temasek Holdings, which is wholly owned by the Singaporean government and has significant business ties to China.
  • Fu Chengyu, a high-ranking member of the CCP and former chairman of China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) as well as Sinopec, sat on the board of Temasek Holdings until recently.
  • Sinopec and CNOOC are state-owned Chinese oil giants, with close ties to the CCP and China's industrial espionage operations.
