Van Drew Urges Speaker Pelosi to Schedule Up or Down Vote on Compromise Border Security and Humanitarian Relief Legislation to End Shutdown
Washington, DC,
January 25, 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Congressman Jeff Van Drew twice urged Congressional Leaders to come together and compromise to end the needless shutdown which is now in its 34th day. The first letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi requested that she guarantee an up or down vote on compromise legislation that mirrors President Trump’s request for border security and deportation protection for the beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) programs. The second letter was sent to House and Senate Leadership from both parties on behalf of the “Blue Dog Coalition” which is comprised of pragmatic and fiscally-responsible Democrats. Van Drew and his colleagues urged Congressional Leaders to hold a bipartisan, bicameral summit bringing together House leadership to have a full, transparent discussion about a path forward to reopen the government. “Our constituents sent us to Congress to put an end to political games and to find bipartisan solutions that move this country forward. Our current political stalemate is punishing families, destabilizing our economy, weakening our national security, and embarrassing our great country on the world stage,” says the letter from Blue Dog Coalition members. Rep. Van Drew has repeatedly voted with both parties to end the government shutdown and pay federal workers. He has also authored legislation to fund the U.S. Coast Guard and the Federal Aviation Administration. Regardless of party, Van Drew will continue to support solutions that end the shutdown and protect our borders. Jeff Van Drew is the Representative for New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District. His office in Washington, D.C. is in Cannon House Office Building Room 331 and his District office is in Mays Landing. Van Drew was a practicing dentist in South Jersey for more than 30 years and was previously Senator for New Jersey’s 1st Legislative District. Rep.
