Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Van Drew introduced a resolution to honor the dedication, bravery, and sacrifice of our correctional officers across the United States, particularly those who have lost their lives while on duty. On July 30th, we proudly celebrated Corrections Officers Day in New Jersey, a day established into law by Congressman Van Drew during his tenure in the State Senate. This day honors the memory of Fred Baker, a brave corrections officer who was tragically killed by an inmate while on duty, and pays tribute to all corrections officers who have lost their lives in service. "Without our correctional officers, we could not maintain order or uphold the values of justice that are so inherent to our American society," said Congressman Van Drew. "Every day, they face challenging and often dangerous environments, yet they answer the call of duty with unwavering courage. Too many have tragically paid the ultimate price while protecting our communities. It is time we honor their memory and shine a spotlight on their extraordinary service and sacrifice to our country." As a co-chair of the recently relaunched Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Reform Caucus, Congressman Van Drew is committed to ensuring that our prison system has the necessary resources, staffing levels, and training to support these officers in their demanding roles.
